6th Grade Curriculum Choices 2018-2019

He's my quiet introvert. He's not a joiner but prefers to keep to himself mostly. However, get him in a room filled with elderly women and he becomes a chatty Cathy. Don't ask me how I know.

When given the choice, he'd rather bury himself in a mound of Legos or a stack of good books than do just about anything else. He's an old soul, has a special fondness for vintage cars, and eats salsa by the jar. Please don't touch his hair. Ever. He hates that.

He's listened to every Adventures in Odyssey episode, twice, and likes to quote them often.

At ten, he's reached the tender age when life has a way of getting a little less black-and-white--when patches of gray start to peek through. He's asking hard questions and wanting honest answers.

So this year, I've chosen a few weighty books for him; books that will hopefully help him walk tall into adolescence.

Here's what he'll be learning. Since we only homeschool 4-days a week, you can assume that each of these subjects will only be covered four times each week unless otherwise indicated.

Content-rich subjects

As in year's past, he will do a lot of his content-rich subjects like Morning timehistory, science, art, and creative writing with the rest of the family. You can see all of those subjects and curriculum choices here>>>

Personal Devotions- everyday

Language

  • LLATL The Tan Book (Use coupon code unlikelyhomeschool at checkout to get 15% off your entire purchase from Common Sense Press, the makers of LAHTL.)
  • Finish All About Spelling Level 5 and move on to Level 6.
  • Read for pleasure (everyday).
  • Attend a once-a-week book club with other area homeschoolers.
  • Read the following books that correspond with the LLATL Tan Book.
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch
The Bronze Bow
Big Red
The Horse and His Boy- He's actually reading this one right now, so he'll start the school year with this unit.
  • If he's not currently working through an LLATL suggested book, he will read a chapter from a book that I assign to him. These will be classics, biographies, or exceptional fiction. You can see those here>>>

Math

World View

  • Who is God?- I highly recommend every single title in this four-volume What We Believe series!

Life Skills

  • He will continue to be a child-of-the-day and help me with lunch and dinner once a week.
  • Sweep the entire house after lunch.
  • Empty the dishwasher each day with his younger brother.
  • Wash the windows as needed.
  • Take out the trash as needed.
  • Put his own clean laundry away each week.
  • Dust the house on big-chore days with his younger brothers.
  • Help clean the boys' room and make his bed each day.
  • Take turns mowing and shoveling with his older brother as needed.

Co-operative Learning

This year, our family has joined a larger co-op that meets twice a month in a neighboring town. (Funny enough, it's the same co-op The Hubs attended as a teen.) My son will be in the 3rd-6th-grade group with his younger brother. His classes for the first semester will include the following:

  • Physical Education
  • STEM
  • Botany with a lapbook project

He's growing more and more mature each day. He's beginning to form new and different ideas about the world without my help. He's moving from the learning-what-to-think to the learning-how-to-think stage of childhood and I'm looking forward to watching and cheering him on from the sidelines.

    1. Yes. I've never had them do the notebooks because I think they're mostly busy work.

    2. Good to hear. That’s exactly what I was thinking.
