What's in the Bible? Vol. 1 Review

The popcorn was popped, the lights were dimmed, we were all snuggled in together for one of our favorite ways to unwind...FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT! This past weekend, we had the opportunity to watch In the Beginning, Volume 1 of the What's in the Bible? DVD series.

This entertaining series by Phil Vischer, creator of Veggie Tales, is designed to walk kids through the entire Bible by using short sketch-comedy style clips. With the use of puppets and simple animations, What's in the Bible relates the Who, What, Where, When, and How of select portions of Scripture and how each story fits together to reveal God's amazing plan of Redemption for a fallen humanity.

In Volume 1 of this family-friendly series, Vischer has set out to show the "big picture" of Creation. Part 1 of this 2 part video, "What is the Bible?" is filled with catchy songs and humorous clips explaining the physical makeup of a Bible and how it is God's own story written by Him through human authors. Part 2, "Who Wrote the Bible?" further explains the authorship of each book, recounts the very beginnings of the world, and explains how the book of Genesis and a fallen creation sets the stage for the rest of Scripture.

What we liked:

I think Sweetie Pea said it best.  When asked what she thought of the movie, she announced, "It was a funny movie and very appropriate.  I like that it was a movie that we ALL could watch."  Although I was a bit skeptical whether the Sesame Street style puppetry would hold the interest of my older kids, I was pleasantly surprised that it did.  Witty writing and relevant information made this a movie for multiple age groups.  

My boys especially like the hilarious Buck Denver who was satirically patterned after reserved news anchors.  

Quick Aside: 

While my children enjoyed the fast-paced, zany humor of the characters, the movie was laden with information making it a rather "deep" movie choice for a Family Movie Night.  As a homeschool mom, I would definitely recommend this video for an informative home Bible lesson or as an entertaining addition to a Sunday School class or Awana club.
